So…beauty Army has had a rough few months. It basically fell apart, got a new CEO, tried to get its subscribers to come back by giving multiple promises that things were different and vouchers for free boxes. I fully admit to being skeptical. The old Beauty Army had a very poor sample selection, hit and miss as to whether you actually got the samples you selected, and unreliable delivery.
The Walmart beauty box is a fun one. It’s seasonal, coming out every 3 months, but unlike Target, you can subscribe to it, and it’s only $5. I call that a pretty excellent deal, especially since even if I don’t use EVERYTHING, the value is definitely there.
InCoco Nail Art Stickers
Speaking of Value, these really got me excited. I love nail decals, and polish, and this style is especially fun. I can’t wait to try them.
Goody Slide Proof Hair Ties
I use and loose hair ties all the time, so these Goody Slide Proof were a great treat. (See? The box has already paid for it self) I’m in that super thick preggo hair mode right now, so I go through these really fast
I have received this Lady Gaga Fame perfume in other boxes
It’s not my favorite, because it’s super sultry, and rich. I prefer much lighter scents. I can see possibly wearing a very light splash out to a formal event or a ritzy date with the hubby, but it’s definitely not for every day wear on me.
Sally Air Brush Legs
I LOVE this stuff, I have been using the spray version for years! I hate wearing nylons and this is the perfect product when its too hot out for an extra layer. It makes legs super smooth looking, and spider veins are no more. Just make sure you let it dry COMPLETELY before you get dressed.
Schwarzkopf Essence Ultime Diamond Color and Radiance Shampoo and Conditioner
Well. That’s a mouthful… I didn’t notice an immediate difference when I tried this out, but I also don’t have colored hair, and for right now, my hair is pretty healthy, other than needing a trim. That being said, it smelled OK, and I REALLY appreciate the fact that there are BOTH a shampoo and conditioner to try.
Vaseline Intensive Care Advanced Repair Lotion
Lotion samples always come in really handy, and Vaseline makes a great product! not much more to say there…
Truly Radiant Clean and Fresh Toothpaste by Arm and Hammer
I like Toothpaste samples, and this is a good one. With as much as we travel, samples like this are super useful and this will be thrown in my stash for camping and traveling.
Simple Micellar Cleansing Water (one use)
This was a tiny (one use) sample. We call them foil packets, because you cant close them back up and essentially need to be used all at once. It was a nice little bonus, but it would probably not be something that I would buy because I like the act of washing my face. It relaxes me at the end of my day, and makes me feel cleaner. This was like putting on a toner, I didn’t feel like I got everything, and I used it on a day when I wasn’t wearing makeup at all.
Nivea In Shower Body Lotion (single use)
I use this stuff on a regular basis, because I’m constantly forgetting to put on lotion after I get out of the shower. This way it’s already in there with me and super easy to rub on, rinse off and BAM! Silky skin! This got used immediately.
I felt the box definitely paid for itself this season, although, I would have LOVED to have seen a makeup product this time around. What did you guys think of your boxes?
I am on the fence on this bag. I like the idea of it but not necessarily the design I got. I am not a huge fan of the color purple so that’s the main reason. I will definitely use this bag. The size is comparable to other bags we have received but nothing out of the ordinary.
Smashbox X Rated Mascara
ALL Smashbox mascaras are amazing. This one is no
exception. The brush was a bit interesting. I actually stopped to look at it in detail before
applying the product because it was such an odd shape. It applied well and I was able to also use it on my lower lashes with no product hitting my cheeks or under eye area. I really like this mascara and will definitely use it.
Hikari Cosmetics Shimmer Bronzer
I adore Hikari products! I got the blush in my Ipsy bag a few months ago and it is now one of my go to products when I want a bright pink blush with great pigmentation. This product was no exception. I applied this product this morning for a general overall flush effect and it worked beautifully. The four colors in the compact blend well together and give a beautiful pink/brown color. There are little sparkles in one corner and that adds a bit of shimmer to the overall effect which I love. I highly recommend this product and Hikari products in general. Love it!
INSPR Eye Fluff Brush
I used this today to apply my shadow in the crease. It worked really
well and applied the product evenly. I can always use a good crease brush and this is a perfect addition to my collection. The bristles are soft and pick up a decent amount of product with just one swipe.
Soo AE 3 Collagen Essence Sheet Mask Set
I am giving this away because I honestly won’t
use it. I will most likely try to trade it with someone for something I will actually use and if not, will give it away as a gift. I know Ipsy is always trying to promote new partners but seriously? I won’t use this. Never have and probably never will. Stop sending me stuff I specifically say I will not use, please. UGH.
Epice Hydrating Mask
Yet another product I will not use. I will try to trade it to someone for something better. I am frustrated with this month’s selections as this is the second item I will not be using/have no use for. Yes, it’s only $10 a month for this stuff but I want to get things I will actually use and not throw/give away. What a disappointment
Paige and Ipsy!
Not my favorite bag in terms of looks but still a cute one. There have been
others I have loathed getting but this one is not one of them. I will definitely be using it in
L.A.B. Live and Breathe Beauty “Just Blending In” brush
The brush is a nice size, blending brush. The bristles are soft and pick up product well. I was able to use this brush as both a transition shade brush and an accent shade brush. I can definitely see myself using it regularly. It is not as soft as say a Morphe brush or even an ELF brush but it is still a nice texture.
Nudestix Lip & Cheek Pencil in “Mystic”
The product comes in nice packaging and applies
smoothly. It almost has a cream finish look to it. That makes sense as it is also being marketed as a blush. I only had to apply once around the lips to get a great color payoff. Overall a great nude lip product.
Ren Skincare Evercalm Global Protection Day Cream
Wow! This product is amazing! I was
a little skeptical about it when I first opened it but after applying it, I know I will purchase it in the future! The lotion has a semi strong scent that fades after applying and the product goes on smoothly and easily. Usually when I apply my face cream, it takes two attempts before my skin feels moisturized and not “tight”. That was not the case at all with this product. I could feel it absorbing into the skin and when I woke up with morning, it was still doing the job and my skin felt incredible. I love this lotion!
Buxom Cosmetics Wildly Whipped Lightweight Liquid lipstick in “Centerfold”
This product is…interesting. It is being marketed as a liquid lipstick and it really isn’t. I would compare this product and consistency to the Maybelline Vivid Matte liquid lipstick. It goes on smoothly, like a gloss, but does appear matte. It does not dry the lips and the color payoff is great. I am just thrown off by the label of “liquid lipstick” as it isn’t. I love the brand and wear products of theirs but in this case, would prob not purchase this again as it is so similar to the Vivid Matte lipsticks. Maybelline is cheaper. 🙂
Moroccan Oil Moroccan Oil treatment
I’ve used this product in the past. It is nice but not for
me. I already have healthy hair and don’t need this product. I didn’t even use this. I traded it for a lipstick from someone else who also gets Ipsy. I also don’t really like the scent either.
Looks like Natalie had a great bag this month! How did you like yours?
Not much to say on this months glossy box, I think we were both a touch underwhelmed with the products, but here goes!
Megs- Well, I’m a fan of aloe and Glossy Box is definitely in summer mode with two of the five items being aloe based. This is a nice cleanser. Nothing remarkable. Does the job, doesn’t really have a smell (which I appreciate). It has a very small grain to it so that you feel it’s exfoliating a bit but not too much so that you don’t mind using it 2x/day as directed. I’ll have to pick up the toner and moisturizer and see how the complete combo works.
Megs- I love this size. It’s a nice one to throw into my bag when traveling. Mine was REALLY pink. Definitely a summer polish. It goes on fine and isn’t streaky. I also appreciate that Orly doesn’t contain formaldehyde. I don’t know that I’d consider the cap ‘award winning’…
Paige- I received an interesting gray/ light mauve shade. Its not something I’d wear on a regular basis, but it’s a pretty neutral color that goes on very clean. I will get some use out of this polish for sure. I appreciate the rubberized cap for sticky polish.
Megs– Well, somebody’s been having really bad sex because this is not the Be All End All of mascaras. In fact, the brush is cumbersome and a bit useless. The actual mascara is fine for one coat but it doesn’t build well despite what the large advertisement on the box says. This will go into the ‘I don’t care if I lose it’ travel collection.
Paige– I hate to say it, because I was really excited about this product when I found out that it would be in the box, but I think Megs is right. It’s really too bad because I have heard some AWESOME stuff about this mascara.
First off, I HATE HATE HATE having to wipe a mascara brush off before I use it, it just feels like extra work and time that I don’t have when I’m half asleep in the mornings. (Mascaras like this do exist, and they are awesome.) The brush was a bit hard to use, but it might have been because I tend to stay away from brushes that are anything but straight. I have just never had much luck with the oddly shaped brushes.
All that being said however, I did notice a distinct lengthening and volumizing of my lashes upon first application, but when I tried for more, it didn’t seem to build, and I felt like I got it everywhere. It did flake a little bit throughout the day- not good for this contact lens wearer…
Megs- Number two of the Aloe items in this box. I have to say, the electric green color is very off-putting. I’ve never understood why companies think that anything aloe has to be that scary green. Pure aloe isn’t that color, just calm down. Sorry… Ok. It goes on well and has a nice coolness about it when first put on. I find that it is vaguely tacky though once dried. It definitely doesn’t play nicely under makeup. So, It will go into my beach bag for when I get out of the water and am super dry from the salt.
Paige- This is the only aloe product that I received in the box, but it came in the nick of time, since I did a mud run this weekend and got a wicked sun burn on the front of my shoulders near my arm pit (slather that sun screen EVERYWHERE folks- especially if you don’t know what obstacles your gonna face) This did take the sting away, but I didn’t really notice a difference from the natural (clear) aloe gel that I buy at my local Target. I generally use aloe gel on my face after washing at night, so I’ll continue to use this, then go back to my normal aloe and see if anything changes.
Megs- I don’t know if it actually plumps my lips or not but they are super smooth after this has been on about 5-10 minutes. I’ve taken to putting my foundation on, putting this on my lips, putting the rest of my makeup on, and then putting a gloss on right before walking out the door. It helps the gloss last longer and look better. A keeper! I’ll have to see if it comes in other colors and maybe just skip the gloss.
Paige– Plumping treatments never work for me (or at least I can never tell if they are working), so I was kind of feeling “meh” when I saw this. However, its really glossy and goes on really easy. I also like the no fuss packaging and light vanilla scent. I am not sure why we got two different looking boxes, but reading everything, it looks like the same product.
Paige- This is the partner to the shampoo I received several months ago I guess. I was finally able to use the system together, but still did not like it much. It smells nice, but it’s hard to rinse out. Not only that, I don’t have colored hair, so I can’t really test it accurately. This might go to Megs or Blake to see if they can use it. Guys? Any takers?
Our May box was not bad by any means, and you’re not always going to make everyone happy, but we have definitely seen better from Glossy Box.
Wow where do I even begin with this crazy weekend of Gen Beauty?
Once both of us were done we thought “what now?”. It looked like a cluster**** in a huge white tent! There was no concept of lines that we could conceive, just huge globs of people at each vendor. In the end, we decided to simply walk around and try to figure out what the “must sees” were for us. Upon further investigation we realized that there were a lot of vendors who were doing touch-ups (however, no one mentioned to me that we probably should have started with clean, makeup free faces, so they were skipped). The next revelation was that we needed to pick a line and pick it fast, as it was becoming increasingly crowded.
Once we had our bearings, we headed for the NYX line which ended up being two lines. In one, we got to vote for a You-Tuber and get a free popsicle. (YUMMO) Then, after we voted, we took pictures to get a free item.
The popsicle wasn’t bad at all, and after waiting in both lines we received two free full size lip glosses, a NYX tote and 40% off all their products! Not bad right? NYX was definitely the longest wait with the most people for the first day.
After the fun of shopping we decided to check out each vendor to see what their freebies were. There were a couple good ones, like LA Girl and IT cosmetics, who also gave us wonderful tote bags with a coupon or a lipstick. Actually, the majority of vendors had something to give us, which was awesome. Not something little either! Of course there were a few who gave out travel sized items, but mostly we either received full size, or a couple travel sized items from each vendor.
The only issue for me was, that even though there were a lot of vendors, who were giving away these awesome items, it didn’t seem like there was much for sale. Yes, they were informing us of their new and upcoming items, but we weren’t able to actually BUY much. If I am going to an event, and I love the products that are featured, then I really want to be able to buy the products at the event, not write them down or take pictures to go by later. Isn’t that why we were there? To get a first glimpse of new items? What better way to do that than allow us to purchase said items? Seems to make more sense to me. But I digress…
Once we came back from lunch, with tans and full bellies, we formed our game plan. We had wanted to see a couple You-Tubers but it was super hectic because there was really no set panel location, they were just out in the open, in the middle of the tent, talking about their vlogs in big crowds, which was not for us. It would have been nice to have placed them in a separate room (or area, as it were) where they could be heard over the din and we could maybe sit down.

We just received a sneak peak from Glossy Box, and it looks like all subscribers will receive a sample of Too Faced Better Than Sex Mascara
There was only one (1!) item on my available list to chose from that I was even remotely interested in and it’s been this way every time I’ve chosen samples. Also, it’s not a huge choice list. It is maybe 12-13 each time. Box #1, never came. Box #2 went to the old address (oops). Box #3 just arrived (this review is of it). Box #4 just had it’s sample choosing window and it was the same drill.
So, needless to say, I am kicking myself for paying up front for 12 months of boxes (saving 3 dollars a box) instead of trying it for a couple months first. Darn my miser-ish ways. They always flare up at the most inopportune times. Have I paid up front for any other boxes? Noooo. Just this one…
Juice Beauty Oil Free Moisturizer – Eh, I can take it or leave it. It’s fine. Doesn’t really smell like anything and didn’t tell any difference from using it or Jergen’s which is my default after cleaning my face.
Lusera Tangle Free Shampoo – This peaked my interest because tangle free is a high claim with my hair. It was a decent sized sample (probably enough for 2.5-3 uses to the normal person which meant that it was actually enough for one use for me). Again, didn’t really smell like anything (which is fine, I’d rather that then something that smells like chemicals), but the blow was that there was nothing Tangle Free about it. Not while washing/rinsing in the shower. Not while drying it. Not while brushing it afterwards. Nothing. So…that goes into the ‘Don’t buy again’ list.
Neutrogena Naturals Makeup Remover Towelettes – This is the one item that I was happy to chose. I love these things. So convenient, great for business trips (This sample was 7 cloths), they work well and aren’t too harsh on my skin. I buy these in the normal quantities.
Shea Moisture Shampoo and Hair Masque – First off, this company makes amazing smelling products. I have their Black African soap and I love it. This was no exception. Smelled great. The problem came in that the amount you get isn’t enough to do anything with. I know I have super thick hair, but this was ridiculous. Squeezing every last bit out that I could (not particularly an easy thing to do in the shower, at least I remembered to cut it open with scissors before hopping in because there was no way it was tearing…) only gave me about a quarters worth of product in the palm of my hand. That covers approximately the top 1/16th of my head.
Cetaphil Cleansing Cloths – I got these because I figured, if I had to get something else, at least I could take these with me when I travel. I’ve used the Cetaphil lotion before and it didn’t cause adverse reactions with my skin so I am assuming these will be ok as well.
No7 Lift and Luminate Day & Night Serum – Well, maybe if there was enough for more than one application I could test over a week their claim to ‘reduce the appearance of wrinkles, visibly lift, (and) even skin tone’…alas, no change in skin tone that day.
Wow, we got the exact same Glossy Box this month, which is a rarity, because we are so different as far as what we prefer to wear. Here’s what we thought:
Paige’s Thoughts– I thought it was a good box this month! There were good products, all good sizes and probably one that I will go out and buy for my self. However, I would like samples of brands that I am more familiar with as well.
Meg’s Thoughts– This was quite the month for glossy box. Highs and Lows. Two SUPER products that I will be going out to get again, one really pretty product, one that was fine (just sort of eh…totally me, not GB), and 1 DUD.
Glam Glow Power Mud
Meg– First, I am a huge fan of Glam Glow. That being said, this was no exception. Went on easily, you can feel it working as it dries and I loved how it felt washing off in the shower. I just wish the effects lasted a little longer. I could see the difference for about 24 hours.
Paige– I had never tried this but have heard some awesome things about it, so I was really excited to see this in my box. It works just like it says it will, my skin was tighter and smoother, and as with most mud masks, you actually feel it tightening and working while it’s on. Like Megan said though, I wish the effects lasted a bit longer, but it makes skin super smooth for a day or two.
Meg– Okay, I was a bit skeptical, but…I loved it! I really needed to be careful not to rub too hard. That being said, my skin was smooth afterwards and felt awesome. I kept touching my face and having to slap my own hand away. The only downside is that the granules that you wipe/wash off get everywhere. Next time I am definitely using this in the shower. I had to Swiffer my bathroom floor and I still feel the little buggers.
Paige– I actually thought this was a hair product at first, because of the name. Good thing I read the packaging before I tried it! This is a face scrub that is supposed to clean and smooth your skin. And it did do that… But, it also made huge mess, i.e., miniscule pellets EVERYWHERE, even after rinsing several times. This is definitely an in-shower product. My skin was crazy smooth after the first use though, and ladies, try it on you decolletage, and thank me later.
Megs– I admit it. I’m hopeless when it comes to using hairspray. It just doesn’t do anything to my hair unless I have enough in there to make it look and feel like a shellacked helmet. On the plus side, if my bathing suit starts riding up during photo shoots (yeah…) I have just the thing (thank you, Miss Congeniality).
Paige– I really don’t use hairspray that much either, so this is just kind of “meh” for me. It seemed to work just fine and it’s supposed to have more benefits for your hair than other sprays, so on those super rare occasions when I do need it, I’ll be comfortable pulling this out. I did notice that, unlike other aerosol sprays, that can result in a sticky mess if your not careful, this dried in no time, not leaving a bad residue. It also smelled pretty good!
Megs– Best thing about this? The box. (Paige was too excited to remove it from the box to get a good picture though. Sorry Guys!) It’s awesome. Such fun colors and designs. The polish is good too. It’s a base coat. Goes on nicely, not too thick. nothing outstanding, but a solid product. I would get it just for the box.
Paige– This was so cute! I love pretty packaging and this was no exception. I also love when it’s pretty and WORKS well. This does what it’s supposed to. It went on well, and dried smooth. It seemed to dry quickly as well, which is a plus because I’m always in a rush. My nail polish went on smoothly over the top with no smearing and has pretty much stayed in place for at least 4 days as of this review. I would LOVE to try out a color from this line for summer. Bonus for me! (And this is ’cause I’m strange) I love that it comes in a square bottle that’s skinny enough to shove into an over-packed makeup bag.
Megs– This is everything I dislike about lipsticks. First, the color is just bad for me. It has almost gray-purple undertones which make me look like I’m severely ill even in full foundation. Second, it did not go on well. It was almost dry and when I tried putting a bit of chapstick on first, the color wouldn’t apply. Third, once on, it showed every ridge, bump, line, etc. My lips aren’t super duper smooth but they are a darn sight better than this made them look. Into the trash it went and people, I NEVER throw makeup samples out (unless they are old).
Paige– Wow, it’s like we are talking about two different lipsticks! I thought this was a really pretty matte pinky nude shade, perfect for my skin tone. I am excited about the matte lipstick trend and wanted to try it. While I was really happy with the consistency and staying power once the color was on my lips, it was really hard to get on because it was so sticky (possibly because it was the first application?). It might become easier with use though, so I will keep trying. Bonus, it stayed on through my daily run, so I’m really happy!
Update- The second time I applied, it went on much more like regular lipstick should, and kept its staying power.
